LayedOut In The Beginning

It all started with a truck.

One day, cruising down the road in my long box Chevy, I noticed a guy who had just moved into the neighborhood. Parked outside was one of the sickest GMC hot rods I had ever seen in my life. Every time I rolled past the house, I’d nearly snap my neck looking back at it. Eventually I thought to myself:

“I gotta pull in. I gotta see this thing in person.”

That moment sparked everything.

That’s where my friendship with Phil began — the classic story of a truck guy pulling over to talk to another truck guy. One conversation turned into another, and before long we were hitting car shows together every weekend.

At one show in Shawnigan Lake, I ran into Scott — the previous owner of the truck I own today. His short box GMC was parked beside Phil's truck, and I remember standing there telling Phil, “That’s the kind of truck I want one day.”

A couple months later, the opportunity came up to buy it.

Phill brought the truck to my attention, and without hesitation, I jumped on it. That truck changed more than just what I drove — it changed my direction in life.

From there, we spent countless Friday nights cruising the streets, staying out of trouble by getting into a little trouble — scraping low riders around town, heading to car shows, chasing sunsets, and building memories with the homies.

As more people started joining us on those cruises, we realized we had built something bigger than just a group of friends driving around. We had created a brotherhood.

That’s when we decided to give it a name.

A car club born from friendship, passion, and the love of cruising.

As the years went on, we always dreamed about creating our own car show. After all, car shows were what brought all of us together in the first place. Eventually, that dream became reality with the creation of the LayedOut Field of Dreams Charity Car Show.

What started as a few friends cruising the streets evolved into something recognized throughout the community — not just for the cars, but for the charity work, toy drives, and community support we’ve built together over the years.

Zack’s Story

Growing up, I struggled to find purpose.

As a teenager, I spent most of my time riding BMX around the city — jumping curbs, building dirt jumps, and hanging out with the homies as a way to escape some of the harsher realities of life.

BMX gave me freedom. It gave me identity.

But eventually, life changes.

When I met Phill, I found somebody who inspired me to aim higher. Somebody who believed in building something instead of wasting time partying or throwing life away. I saw how much hard work, pride, and passion he poured into his trucks and builds, and it motivated me in a way I can’t fully explain.

That became a major turning point in my life.

Low riding and hot rodding gave me the same feeling BMX once did as a kid. The excitement. The creativity. The brotherhood. The adrenaline of cruising with your friends while expressing yourself through your build, your paint, your wheels, and your style.

Even now, every time I cruise through the city, it reminds me of being young again — sitting on my BMX bike watching flashy low riders and chrome wheels roll past me, dreaming that one day I’d own something like that.

Now I’m living that dream.

Phil's Story

This is Zack speaking on behalf of Phil.

As long as I’ve known him, Phil has always been deeply connected to cars and the car scene. From working at car audio shops in his younger years to owning countless custom builds, cars have always been part of who he is.

Like every kid who grew up with Ferraris and Porsches on posters hanging on their bedroom wall, Phill dreamed big.

I’ve even seen a photo of him as a kid standing beside a Ferrari in Europe — a photo he still treasures to this day. Honestly, I believe one day he’ll recreate that same picture standing beside one he owns himself.

And knowing Phil, I don’t doubt it for a second.

Over the years, I’ve watched countless vehicles pass through his hands — lifted trucks, low riders, Hondas, classics, show builds — more than I could ever count. He’s the kind of guy who truly lives and breathes automotive culture.

I’ve watched him build vehicles from the ground up with unbelievable attention to detail. His Datsun 510 restoration was next level. His ‘52 Chevy is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. And the amount of low riders he’s owned and built over the years is honestly impossible to count on two hands.

But beyond the builds, Phill is somebody the community respects deeply.

He’s an inspirational builder, a loyal friend, and an incredible leader to have as president of a car club.

Brotherhood, Horsepower & Childhood Memories

The biggest part of being in a car club isn’t the cars.

It’s the brotherhood.

It’s the friendships, the support, the knowledge shared between people who otherwise may never have crossed paths in life.

There’s something special about being surrounded by like-minded people who all share the same passion. The laughter, the late nights, the road trips, the garage sessions, the breakdowns, the victories — all of it brings you back to the feeling of being a kid again.

Honestly, low riding reminds me a lot of BMX.

Back then we were riding bikes together, building jumps, launching through the air, crashing, laughing, and getting right back up to do it again.

Now?

Instead of jumping curbs on BMX bikes…

We’re dragging bumpers across pavement.

Cruising through the city with the homies.

Still chasing that same feeling.

Only now, it comes with chrome, candy paint, hydraulics, horsepower, and the brotherhood that made all of it possible.
